‘Aquaman’ Will Be DC’s Biggest Success Since ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

DC’s Aquaman has earned $751.8 million worldwide so far, which will solidify it as DC’s biggest hit since 2012 Batman film The Dark Knight Rises.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film topped off its Christmas Box office run with a total of $751.8 million. It beat Bumblebee and Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns significantly.

It still has some time left in theaters, and it’s on track to have raked in over $900 million by the end of it’s run.

It could possibly reach the $1 billion mark, but only time will tell if the oceans will rise that high. In the past, only eight superhero films have hit that mark, and the only DC films to hit it were The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. The latter made $1.09 billion by the end of its run. Aquaman is also on track to beat out Wonder Woman, which took home $821.8 million worldwide in 2016.

Much of its popularity must be word of mouth, as Aquaman did not do historically well during its opening weekend. In fact, it opened with the lowest numbers of any previous DC film ever.

Wonder Woman made $103 million during its opener, and Aquaman brought in just $67.4 million.

DC’s next projects include Shazam, set to premiere on April 5, 2019, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020.

Aquaman stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. It is directed by James Wan.
