WARNING: This article contains some mild sex, drugs and violence. More importantly it contains SPOILERS from Animal Kingdom Season One

Animal Kingdom will be back for Season Two, May 30th on TNT. To warm fans up, we’ll do a quick piece each week until the premier. Let’s start where the show started – with Josh.

Poor Josh was not handed the greatest set of role models in his life: a drug addict mom who overdoses and dies in the opening scene, a narcissistic grandmother he has to turn to in order to survive, criminal uncles, and a teacher charged with possession of drugs. Through all this, he manages to keep his grades up. Josh seems like a boring character, when first we meet him. But he turns out to be quite a badass in his own understated way. Here are five moments from Season One where Josh showed himself to be a badass.

That time that Baz was going to blackmail and con Nicki’s father. He went against Baz to help save her and her family. He sold that breakup. She completely believed it when he said he didn’t want her anymore and told her to stay away from his family. Tons of good that did! Josh didn’t understand how deep Nicky’s daddy issues ran. She ran straight to Craig.

There were several times Josh hid things from Scary Smurf rather than rat out his uncles. He didn’t give up the messy carjacking that Pope arranged, and he flat out lied about the safe heist he and the other boys pulled without Baz. He then stared straight into those cold dead eyes, when she confronted him, and didn’t turn to stone.

Baz is surprised and happy to hear that Josh is still in school and doing well. He seems to be one of the smarter kids in class. The school may think of him as a bit of a Goodie-two-shoes, until he takes the blame for his girlfriend’s joint and sleeps with his teacher.

And the time, in the very first episode, where Craig had Josh pulled a gun on the douchebag surfers. That has to feel good the day after your mom dies.

The biggest badass thing I think he’s done so far, is threatening the drug dealer who sold his mom the bad heroin.

Next week we’ll run down some of the most manipulative Smurf moments, then we’ll do Pope’s Creepiest Moments. Don’t worry, we’ll get to all those favorite Craig moments too.

If you need to catch up on Animal Kingdom, it is out on DVD and is available free to Amazon Prime members.

Animal Kingdom on TNT is the American version of a 2010 Australian movie by the same name. It follows the Cody’s, a crime family headed by Ellen Barkin’s character, Smurf. It features Scott Speedman, Ben Robson, Shawn Hatosy and Jake Weary as her biological and adopted sons. We are introduced to the family when Smurf’s cunning grandson, Joshua, comes to live with them after his mother dies of an overdose.
