Following a highly publicized courtroom battle, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are cautiously reentering the world of cinema. However, it is evident that their careers have not reached the same level of prominence as before.
Depp has expressed no interest in returning to Hollywood, which seems appropriate considering the lack of high-profile roles being offered to him. While his portrayal of Jeanne du Barry received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, it is worth noting that such acclaim is becoming increasingly common these days.
On the other hand, Heard has the upcoming DCU blockbuster sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom slated for release in December. However, her involvement in the project has been met with significant controversy, with over a million people signing a petition demanding her removal and rumors circulating that her screen time has been reduced. Consequently, her comeback is unlikely to be a resounding success.
Nevertheless, Heard’s self-imposed exile appears to be drawing to a close. Deadline recently reported that she will make a personal appearance at the Taormina Film Festival in support of In the Fire, a supernatural thriller set in 1899. Apart from her roles in Aquaman and both editions of Justice League, this film will only be her third onscreen credit since 2017 and her first in five years.
However, it is important to note that the previous two films in which Heard appeared—London Fields and Gully—experienced significant delays and were ultimately critically panned and ignored by audiences upon release. Whether In the Fire will meet a similar fate remains uncertain at this early stage. While Heard’s involvement alone cannot determine the film’s outcome, the possibility of it facing challenges cannot be dismissed.
