Amber Heard said Thursday that she’s terrified for her life and has been humiliated and ashamed by a harassment campaign waged against her by ex-boyfriend Johnny Depp, adding that she only wants “Johnny to leave me alone.”
In the six-week libel trial between Depp and his ex-wife, Heard was the final witness. The trial was televised, so millions of people followed it. The interest in the trial seemed to increase as it went on, especially since both Depp and Heard testified about the ugly details of their relationship.
Online and at the courthouse, Depp’s fans have been talking a lot about the case. A lot of people are waiting in line to see the courtroom and they want to see Depp. Heard has been getting booed by people who are watching her as she goes into and leaves the courthouse.
“The harassment and the humiliation, the campaign against me that’s echoed every single day on social media, and now in front of cameras in the showroom — every single day I have to relive the trauma,” Heard said as she fought back tears. “Perhaps it’s easy to forget I’m a human being.”
On cross-examination, Depp lawyer Camille Vasquez told Heard that “your lies have been exposed to the world” and questioned her about people who contradicted portions of her accounts.
“I know how many people will come out of the woodwork to be in support of Johnny,” Heard responded.
Johnny Depp is suing Heard for defamation in Fairfax County Circuit Court, where he is seeking $50 million. In a December 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post, Heard referred to herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse,” which his lawyers claim defamed him despite the fact that it never mentioned his name.
Heard said she hopes the lawsuit will allow her to speak out about what happened to her. She said that she had the right to publish an article that described her experiences and how they relate to the national debate over domestic violence.
“Johnny has taken enough of my voice,” she said. “I have the right to tell my story.”
After the restraining order was granted, Depp has been obsessed with retaliation, according to Heard. She referenced earlier testimony in which Depp texted Heard’s disgruntled former personal assistant and urged her to “come over for a spot of purple and we’ll fix her flabby a— nice and good!!!”
“Johnny promised me — promised me — that he’d ruin my life, that he’d ruin my career. He’d take my life from me,” Heard said.
Johnny Depp has denied ever hitting Heard, and he claims she was the abusive partner in their relationship. Heard has stated that Depp subjected her to a range of physical abuse, including more than a dozen separate incidents.
Richard Gilbert, a hand surgeon for the defense, testified Thursday as the final witness for Depp’s team. According to Mr. Gilbert, it’s possible that the injury to Depp’s middle finger occurred as Depp claims it did.
The tip of Depp’s finger was severed during a fight he and Heard had in Australia. Depp says Heard threw a large vodka bottle at him. Heard says Depp did it to himself with a drug-fueled rage on a night when he also sexually assaulted her.
The jurors will hear the closing arguments on Friday.
