Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is Hosting Women Only ‘Wonder Woman’ Screenings

UPDATE: We received the following statement from Alamo Drafthouse shortly after this story was published:

“Obviously, Alamo Drafthouse recognizes ‘Wonder Woman’ is a film for all audiences, but our special women-only screenings may have created confusion – we want everybody to see this film.” – Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
In celebration of the Wonder Woman film release, one theater in Austin, Texas is hosting some special screenings of the film.

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema announced on Wednesday that it will be hosting one day of female only screenings for the film.  On June 6th, the theater has two show times designated for women only to view the film and celebrate all the feministic wonder that is Wonder Woman.

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense.  The Wonder Woman character has long been considered a role model within the comic world for young women and girls.  She is a symbol of feminism and one of the biggest pop culture icons of all time.  The upcoming Wonder Woman film marks the first time the character is being featured in her own solo film on the big screen.

The theater’s announcement said the following:

“The most iconic superheroine in comic book history finally has her own movie, and what better way to celebrate than with an all-female screening?

Apologies, gentlemen, but we’re embracing our girl power and saying “No Guys Allowed” for one special night at the Alamo Ritz. And when we say “People Who Identify As Women Only,” we mean it. Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female.

So lasso your geeky girlfriends together and grab your tickets to this celebration of one of the most enduring and inspiring characters ever created.”

Though the thought and intent was meant to be positive, many saw the special screenings as reverse sexism.  Several of these displeased moviegoers reached out to the Alamo Drafthouse via their Facebook page.  The theater was not backing down from their planned screenings and had several quippy replies to those who were offended.  The theater replied with the following to one upset patron:

“Very sorry if you feel excluded. We thought it might be kinda fun — for one screening — to celebrate a character who’s meant a great deal to women for close to eight decades. Again, truly, truly, truly, truly sorry that we’ve offended you.”

Even with the controversy still raging on, tickets for the first special screening time sold out almost immediately prompting the theater to add the second screening time to the schedule.  Following suit of the Austin location, the Alamo Drafthouse located in New York City will also hold one women only screening.

Wonder Woman opens in theaters, nationwide, on June 2nd.
