Academy Award Winner Kevin Spacey To Host 71st Annual Tony Awards

For the first time, Oscar, Tony, and Golden Globe winner Kevin Spacey is set to host this year’s 71st Annual TONY® Awards. The award show will be presented live from Radio City Music Hall in New York and pre-recorded for the west coast at 8 pm. Spacey won a TONY® in 1991 for his performance in the category of Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for “Lost In Yonkers.”

The House of Cards star jokingly had this to say regarding the announcement:

“I was their second choice for ‘Usual Suspects,’ fourth choice for ‘American Beauty’ and 15th choice to host this year’s Tony Awards. I think my career is definitely going in the right direction. Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down.” ~Kevin Spacey

Last year, James Corden hosted the TONYS® and brought the largest broadcast viewership since 2001.

Executive producers of the show, Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss stated. “We’re excited to be working with a witty and charming host who is not only a Tony-winning actor and fan of live theatre, he’s also a president who is a true champion of the arts.”

Spacey currently portrays Frank Underwood, for which he has been nominated for Emmys as well as won both Screen Actor Guild and Gloden Globe awards for the role. He won Best Supporting in a Supporting Role for “The Usual Suspects” and Best Actor in a Leading Role for “American Beauty.” His newest projects include “Baby Driver” and “Billionaire Boys Club.”

Nominations for the 2017 TONY® Awards will be announced the morning of May 2nd. The 71st Annual TONY® Awards will  air on June 11th on CBS.
