One of the most popular television comedies is about to shake things up in a major way!

Entering into its tenth season, ABC’s Modern Family is about to go somewhere the series has never gone before – according to co-creator Christopher Lloyd. Lloyd told Entertainment Weekly that, while season ten will have boatloads of laughable moments, just like the seasons prior, we will also be experiencing our first major character death.

Lloyd told EW:

“We’re handling some bigger life events in this season. We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.”

Of course, Lloyd didn’t reveal who int he family would be most impacted by the death, he did tease that it would be the fate of a “significant character on the series.” Lloyd continued by saying the death “will be a moving event — and an event that has repercussions across several episodes.”

It’s not clear when the significant death will occur, so fans need to savor every second they have with the stellar ensemble cast. Modern Family stars Ed O’Neill as Jay Pritchett, Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy, Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy, Sofia Vergara as Gloria Pritchett, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett, Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker, Sarah Hyland as Haley Dunphy, Nolan Gould as Luke Dunphy, Ariel Winter as Alex Dunphy, Rico Rodriguez as Manny Delgado, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons as Lily Tucker-Pritchett and Jeremy Maguire as Joe Pritchett.

The season 10 premiere will kick off the season with the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan setting off more than a few fireworks when they get together at the annual Fourth of July parade where Jay will be acting as the grand marshal. Meanwhile, Haley’s goodbye with Arvin before his trip to Switzerland doesn’t go as well as she pictured it and is distracted by the return of an old flame.

Season 10 of Modern Family premieres Wednesday, September 26th at 9 PM EST on ABC.
