‘A Journey into the Haunted’ Visits ‘Brushy Mountain State Prison’ Part 3

Welcome dear readers to the last article of ‘A Journey into the Haunted’ Visits ‘Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary‘. In Part One I covered the detailed history of Brushy Mountain and in Part Two I covered Brushy’s paranormal history. In this article, I will share with you what my investigation team experienced and what evidence we captured.

When you first walk in Brushy Mountain you feel the difference immediately. The history is in the air if that makes sense. If you close your eyes you can see the prisoners walking in with the coal mine dust covering them, you see them building the prison and walking toward the railroad tracks. In the same sense, you can walk in the cells, in the showers and in the courtyard and feel the anger, see the fights and imagine the murders. As a paranormal investigator, the first piece of equipment is your own 6th sense and Brushy will bring it out.

This is how the prison would affect the cameras, cell phones and recorders.

The first round of evidence I reviewed was our EVP recordings. We took two digital voice recorders. One recorder we had no luck. The second recorder anytime we had any interaction with a spirit we had static interference. This only occurred when we would ask a question. This evidence could be argued by some paranormal investigators but in my years of doing this, it was substantial.

This blue orb was caught in the prison cafeteria. during EVP session.

The second round of evidence I reviewed was our still camera photos. We caught a few different things but to make room to cover everything I will share this photo. This is one of my team members walking into Cell Block C. As you can tell the camera cannot focus. This happened all night long. It is very common that when you are on a paranormal investigation that your camera will have a hard time focusing because there are so many things going on around it, that it is not sure where to focus. So, the camera cannot focus but, in this photo, you can see why. That light source was not there as the photo was taken. The photographer did not use flash and there is no power at the prison. He was the only person taking photos at the time. That light is what we believe to be a spirit orb.

This is what we believe to be a spirit “orb”. There were no light sources and no flash was used while taking this photo.

Now we move on to the last round of evidence which was our video. We caught a lot of evidence on videos. One of my favorite I did a screenshot of and I will share it here. One of the claims was that the prison had “ghost cats”. The “ghost cats” were even around while the inmates were still being housed at the prison. One of my team members even heard a cat hissing during the night. So, during one of our “spirit box” sessions, we were recording video and we caught this fellow sitting in the RAFTERS of this office area watching us.

This is the “ghost cat” watching us from the rafters.

During a session with the “spirit box,” the ghost does not speak but he does laugh a very evil laugh and responds with several loud knocks that we did not hear with our ears while sitting there but upon our review of the video we can hear it. We were getting the opening and slamming of cell doors throughout the entire video recordings.

This is a screenshot of a video. What we think is something watching us. We could not debunk this piece of evidence.

We do sit down have a smoke break with “James” in Cell Block 3 however for future investigators he is not a fan of menthols. I am not a smoker, so this is like the third pack of cigarettes I have bought in my 41 years on this planet and since I just needed one I bought the brand a friend smokes, so I could give her the rest. Well, I guess they do not have the same taste in “smokes” but he did try it for us but not like I saw him do in other videos.

Again, there is so much to share but not enough article to share it with. One of the reasons I wanted to do this article is to find locations that people who are interested in the paranormal like myself can LEGALLY go and safely do investigations. Though investigations are currently on hold at Brushy while they are finishing the remodel they will resume and I will do a follow up article on that so you can plan your own investigation to Brushy Mountain State Pen and see if you can spend the night talking with “Bonnie” or if “Leroy” will follow you around the prison ground. I want to thank Brian May, Peter Waddington, Jaime Brock and Tiffany White for the wonderful tour and for allowing us to investigate this piece of history.
