‘A dream is a wish your heart makes’ is a line that takes all of us back to Disney. Cinderella sings the song that makes all of us believe that our dreams can come true if we just believe in them enough. That’s one of the many lessons we’ve learned from Disney stories and movies; and without us realizing it, some of those have shaped who we are.
We’ve been thinking about Disney a lot lately, from the opening of Pandora – World of Avatar at Disney World and Beauty and the Beast finally coming to DVD/VOD this week, we decided to share a few of our favorite Disney lessons with you. Here are 7 of the best lessons we’ve learned from the fairy tales we love so much!
To never give up on your dreams.
This one is a common theme in Disney stories – you should never give up on your dreams or what you believe in. No matter what challenges, no matter what obstacles, no matter what pain – your dreams are worth the struggle. You’ve got to believe in yourself and your heart and nothing will be able to stand in your way.
That family isn’t defined by love.
This is something that we know all too well, as fans of The Walking Dead, family comes from the people who make you your best you. These people are often blood-related, but they just as often come in the form of people you meet on your journey. It doesn’t matter if someone’s been in your life for 10 years or 10 minutes, family is family, and it’s not a DNA connection.
To ‘just keep swimming’.
This sort of goes back to following your dreams, but it encompasses everything. You’ve got to just keep swimming, no matter what. If you’re having a bad day, if something sad happens, if you’re stressed or tired or feel like giving up – you’ve just gotta keep going.
That true beauty comes from within.
Beauty is about way more than what’s on the outside, and it’s easy to forget that sometimes. We’re held to standards that seem outrageous and we hold ourselves to even stricter ones. Sometimes, we hold others to those outrageous standards too, but true beauty comes from within – every single time.
To be brave.
It’s not easy to be brave all the time, but it’s most definitely worth it. Sometimes fear can try to keep us from the things we want most in the world or the things that would bring us the most happiness. That fear can seem overwhelming but bravery matters, and if you keep at it, you’ll learn that no matter how terrifying something may first seem, the end result is worth facing that fear.
Not to run away from your past.
You’ve got to embrace your past, even the parts of it that hurt. You are the moments that created you, the experiences that have shaped your path. The good things and the bad all come together and form your story. If you try to hide from your past or to run away from it; you’ll miss out on who you’re destined to become.
To be kind to others.
The most important lesson that Disney has taught is to be kind to others, it’s the thing that matters most at the end of the day. Kindness is what the world seems to be missing right now – and we could all use a reminder that nothing matters more than showing compassion towards others.
