September 19th, 2017 marked the 10th anniversary of the airing of the first ever episode of Gossip Girl. The series, which would grow to be something larger than anyone could have imagined, left a mark on its viewers and on a special part of pop culture. There was an abundance of drama, which goes without saying, the title of the series is ‘gossip girl’ but there was also a lot of love and companionship as well.
In fact, love and companionship were at the center of the series, and while not all of the relationships were laced with good intentions, each one played a hand in making the series what it was, and that included telling the story the way it was necessary. While we looked back at the series for its 10th anniversary, we also looked back at some of our favorite couples in the series history. Honestly, what good is a series without some totally addictive romance?
In no particular order, here are 5 of the best Gossip Girl relationships.
Blair and Louis
Their relationship didn’t ever have a true fighting chance, even when you did find yourself rooting for them but being engaged to Louis was critical for Blair’s character arc. She grew, she realized what’s really important, and she was willing to sacrifice her heart’s true desire so that she didn’t truly lose it forever. There’s nothing as selfless as giving up something you want most so that it can flourish. While they weren’t ‘endgame’, and with good reason, it was the second most important romantic relationship of Blair’s life.
Chuck and Blair
Now, these two were destined to be endgame, even before they knew it themselves. Their story is twisted and full of some extreme highs and lows like when Chuck tried to sell Blair for a hotel and Blair got married to Louis because she thought it was necessary to save Chuck’s life. Through their first night together to the accident that almost took Chuck’s life, and how they managed to rebuild from that darkness, they grew together as they grew as individuals and that’s the most important part of a relationship. Their wedding, at the end of the series, was the stuff they’d both dreamed of. I am me, and you are you. We’re Chuck and Blair, Blair and Chuck. The worst thing you’ve ever done, the darkest thought you ever had, I will stand by you through anything. Because I love you
‘I am me, and you are you. We’re Chuck and Blair, Blair and Chuck. The worst thing you’ve ever done, the darkest thought you ever had, I will stand by you through anything. Because I love you.’
Serena and Nate
Serena and Nate were like that cute couple that you always root for and on the surface, everything seems absolutely lovely. If there hadn’t been the drama plaguing their relationship, we think they would have had their happily ever after, but there was always something looming over them. It was simply the wrong time or they had pieces of their hearts left with other people, but when they were together – in the rare moments where things were the way they should have been – they were absolutely smitten with one another. They were sweet and fun and sexy and, well, the kind of couple you’d hope to be part of – without all that gossip girl drama.
Lily and Rufus
Even if it didn’t seem like it, Lily and Rufus were one of the main relationships of the entire series. Their love, both in the past and as the series progressed was a huge point in the show, it determined the way a lot of characters handled themselves, alone and with one another. Dan and Serena were (obviously) affected by it as were Jenny and Eric, but Rufus’ ex-wife and Lily’s ex-husbands felt the sting of their passion as well. Some love never dies, even if you walk away from it, and theirs was a testament to that. Even though they had some pretty low points together, the way Rufus loved Lily through her brilliance and, well, when she was less than that was incredibly inspiring. While they may not have ‘ended up together’ as the series ended, we’re sure in that place where series’ go once they end, well, they’re together there.
Serena and Carter
Serena and Carter had a fleeting romance, but it was one that seemed to change her in a way that none of her other relationships did. Yes, she ended up with Dan and while we liked them together (maybe not enough to write about them in our top 5 list, but it’s just because we’re watching the episodes where Dan is in love with Blair and we still don’t get it) her and Carter seemed like they had what it took to go the distance. Yes, there were lies between them, but they weren’t done with malicious intent, they were done to try to either help or shield the other. Carter loved Serena, and she loved him, and with one of the most important matters of her heart – she inlisted Carter for help. At first, it was because of who he was and what he was able to do, but after that, it’s because she trusted him. She didn’t have that level of trust with anyone else, and she didn’t strive to be her best self with anyone else either.
