On Friday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a Prince Anders movie was in development. Prince Anders was introduced in this past summer’s Aladdin. The spinoff film, which will feature Billy Magnussen returning to the character of Prince Anders, will most likely air on Disney+.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirch, producers of Aladdin, will return to produce the Prince Anders film. As well, THR noted that a live-action sequel to Aladdin is “in the planning stage.”

The time of the announcement was not well thought out, as it came on the heels of Mena Massoud’s interview with The Daily Beast where the actor claimed he couldn’t event get an audition after starring as the title character in Aladdin.

“I’m kind of tired of staying quiet about it. I want people to know that it’s not always dandelions and roses when you’re doing something like Aladdin,” the actor told The Daily Beast. “‘He must have made millions. He must be getting all these offers.’ It’s none of those things. I haven’t had a single audition since Aladdin came out.”

Massoud said the situation is “wild to a lot of people.”

“People have these ideas in their head. It’s like, I’m sitting here being like, OK, Aladdin just hit $1 billion,” he said. “Can I at least get an audition? Like I’m not expecting you to be like, here’s Batman. But can I just get in the room? Like, can you just give me a chance? So it’s not always what you think.”

The success of a film appears to not necessarily result in the same success for the actor.  Social media has been up in arms about the inability of Massoud, a person of color, to get an audition while a white male character who was not part of the original story gets a spinoff show. You can view the thread here on Twitter.

Equally though, there are supporters of the new series, as fans are excited to earn more about the entertaining character, Prince Anders.

What are your thoughts on both the spinoff and inability of Massoud to get an audition post-Aladdin?
