A Literal Cliffhanger On ‘The Walking Dead’s’ Mid-Season Finale

Tonight’s mid-season finale of The Walking Dead left us with a literal cliff hanger (of sorts)! Season 10’s 8th episode, “The World Before”, had fans on the edge of their seats in what has already been received as the best-reviewed season of The Walking Dead in its ten-year history.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

Season 10 Summary

This season has focused on the result of Alpha (Samantha Morton) and the Whisperers beheading a group of the survivors, which included Tara, Enid, and others.  As a result of this, lines have been drawn and tension has been building.  This season has shown the struggles that Carol (Melissa McBride) and others have had when dealing with the loss of loved ones. This has been pouring gasoline onto the imminent confrontation with Alpha and the impending Whisperer War.

Also, a central focus of this season has been Saddiq’s (Avi Nash) PTSD with having witnessed the beheadings of his friends.  There were significant exchanges with Dante that ultimately resulted in the reveal that Dante is a spy for the Whisperers, having killed Saddiq upon Saddiq’s revelation that Dante is a spy.

Also, we’ve followed a lot of Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) storyline, with his interaction with Lydia (Cassidy McClincy), his escape from Alexandria, to his new home among the Whisperers and his new best friend, Beta (Ryan Hurst).

Mid-Season Finale and Where Season 10 Will Take Us

However, tonight’s episode felt like it was leading up to a confrontation between Carol and Alpha and we were almost able to see it.  It appears that Alpha is much more in control of her emotions and knows that Carol is not in control of her own. Alpha was able to leverage Carol’s emotions and desire to kill Alpha.  Alpha leads Carol into a trap that now has Carol and the other survivors on a cliff in a cave (thus the literal cliffhanger!)!

This episode also feels like we are moving closer to Michonne’s (Danai Gurira) departure from The Walking Dead. Earlier this summer, it was revealed that this would be Gurira’s final season on the show.  If her time is nearly up, having her depart on a sailboat would somewhat align with her comic book equivalent and seeing her sail out to see.

The last tidbit from tonight’s episode is Rosita’s recklessness in having lost Saddiq, who is the father to her child.  Rosita’s behavior is putting her life in jeopardy without regard for her child.  Thank goodness that Eugene (Josh McDermitt) does care for her, as she was probably doomed without him.  However, it’s also suspected that Rosita maybe next to bite the dust now that it’s been announced that she’ll be starring in Netflix’s Selena.

What are your thoughts on tonight’s episode?  It appears that Alpha continues to have a one-up on our survivors.  Shoot, there may even be another spy among them in Oceanside.
