‘Black Adam’ Release Date & News

The past few weeks have been massive for DC. First, Joker became the most successful movie and then the highest grossing rated R movie. Then the Snyder Cut exploded on Twitter with well over 700,000 tweets resulting in it being a trending topic for the entire day. Among these outstanding achievements, we also got some news regarding The Rock’s Black Adam.

In June, the DC film found its director. Jaume Collet-Serra is set to direct the superhero film starring Dwayne Johnson. Of course, these two have just finished working together on Disney’s Jungle Cruise. Jaume’s previous works also include The Shallows, and Liam Neeson’s The Commuter, Run All Night, Unknown, and Non-Stop.

Now, Black Adam has a release date. The news was announced via The Rock’s Instagram.

The Man in Black ⚡️ Like most kids growing up, I dreamed about being a superhero. Having cool superpowers, fighting for what’s right and always protecting the people. It all changed for me, when I was 10yrs old and was first introduced to the greatest superhero of all time – SUPERMAN. As a kid, Superman was the hero I always wanted to be. But, a few years into my fantasy, I realized that Superman was the hero, I could never be. I was too rebellious. Too rambunctious. Too resistant to convention and authority. Despite my troubles, I was still a good kid with a good heart – I just liked to do things my way. Now, years later as a man, with the same DNA I had as a kid – my superhero dreams have come true. I’m honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become, BLACK ADAM. BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people – but he does it his way. Truth and justice – the BLACK ADAM way. This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together. BLACK ADAM 12.22.21 ⚡️ Huge thank you to my friends, @jimlee and @bosslogic for this first time ever bad ass collaboration.

The origin story will be flying to our screens on December 22nd 2021. Yes, it’s a long way away but it’s a start. The Rock has been attached to this project for around 10 years now so I’m just glad things are moving forward.

In relation to Joker, Larry Sher, who was the director of photography for Todd Phillips’ film, is set to shoot Black Adam. While the news wasn’t confirmed by Warner Brothers themselves, Dwayne tweeted this:

Obviously, this is part of a wider story. Shazam! teased the arrival of Black Adam with a short backstory of the Wizard and the Champion. In addition to that, a deleted scene further hinted at Black Adam’s arrival. When the Shazam Family take their thrones in the Rock of Eternity they discuss the elephant in the room… the missing member.

However, it seems as though we may have to do more waiting for the cinematic clash between the godlike beings. Shazam! 2 has been given the green light but according to Zachary Levi, will not star Shazam’s archenemy.

I can say that as far as I know, Black Adam is not going to be in the second Shazam!, because the idea is that they want to go and do a standalone Black Adam movie first. And then it would kind of be, if we do a third Shazam! and a second Black Adam, kind of [parallel] like that, that’s where we would [meet].

So what does this mean? Well the timeline may look a little like this:
  • Shazam!
  • Black Adam
  • Shazam! 2
  • Shazam vs Black Adam

Like I said, we have a lot of waiting to do before we see both characters on the big screen but this is certainly a start.

Are you excited to see Dwayne Johnson as the supervillain? Let us know in the comments. Hopefully with news like this coming out, it means that we may get a better idea of what the origin story with entail- story, villains, characters.

I’ll leave you with one final question… who would you like to see Black Adam go up against?
