Ahead of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D panel at San Diego Comic Con 2019, it was announced that the show will end after completing its run with Season 7. The tv show is currently two thirds of the way through Season 6. We were offered some teasers during the panel into what is to come in the shows future.
The show is ending after airing Season 6 and Season 7
Not only was a brand new trailer detailing the show’s finale dropped, but it was announced beforehand that sadly the show would be ending following its final seventh season.
Season 7 will air next summer, so we have one final season to catch the Agents before it all wraps up for good.
This news is perhaps unsurprising down to the fact that Marvel has been axing a lot of its tv shows recently. This includes Jessica Jones, The Punisher, Daredevil, The Defenders, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Disney seems to be cancelling the shows that remain outside of its own hands so this move to cancel S.H.I.E.L.D fits in with its current M.O.
Fans left reeling after the news
It doesn’t mean this news is less saddening for fans or any less shocking. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has a huge loyal fanbase and is well received by audiences. The show ending will bring about a loss to S.H.I.E.L.D fans. At least the series will be finishing on a high and will be able to choose its own final destination. This means the show can deliver an ending to seven seasons that it truly deserves. The writers and crew will be able to finish the show as they intend and write an ending of their own accord.
Happy Birthday to Jed Whedon!
After this sad news it wasn’t all doom and gloom at the panel though. After dropping the trailer for the Season 6 finale, fans surprised Jed Whedon by singing a huge round of Happy Birthday.
Season 6 will continue to air its last four episodes for this year, including its double-episode finale. Next summer will bring us Season 7, which will be Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’s very last season.
