Disney’s Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid’ Eyeing Javier Bardem to Play King Triton

According to Variety, Disney’s upcoming live-action is now in talks with Academy Award winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) to play Ariel’s under the sea father King Triton. Bardem is no stranger to the Caribbean waters as he recently played Captain Salazar in 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. If cast, he will join confirmed cast members singer Halle Bailey (Ariel), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), and Awkwafina (Scuttle) for the upcoming production.

Not yet confirmed, Harry Styles as Prince Eric and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula are also still in talks to join the cast.

The new Disney live-action will showcase well-known songs from the 1989 animated classic. THR reported Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana) and original composer Alan Menken will also be adding new material for the film.

Menken is no stranger to Ariel and her underwater world as he composed the animated original songs Under the Sea, Part of Your World and Kiss the Girl. Marc Platt, the executive producer on Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin, will also produce this project.

Production on Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid will begin in early 2020.
