Daniel Radcliffe joins Netflix’s ‘Kimmy Schmidt’ Special

Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is returning for an all-new interactive special 2020.  Not only that, but Harry Potter and Miracle Workers’ star Daniel Radcliffe is joining the cast!

We don’t know much about Radcliffe’s role or the special as a whole other than subtle hints from Netflix. The special will be Kimmy’s “biggest adventure yet,” spanning “three states,” and that viewers could see explosions, a dancing hamburger, a wedding, robot battles and another appearance from Kimmy’s kidnapper, doomsday cult leader Rev. Dr. Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm).

The special will be similar to Netflix’s Black Mirror film, Bandersnatch, so viewers can make choices for the characters.

“Will you foil the Reverend’s evil plan and get Kimmy to her wedding on time? Or will you accidentally start a war against the robots? So grab your remote and a tray of delicious scrod, ’cause Kimmy’s got her own Netflix interactive special,” Netflix teased.

“We’re thrilled to announce that we’re about to start production,” said series co-creator Tina Fey. “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was one of the first original comedy series on Netflix, and now it will be its first interactive comedy event. Fans will be able to make choices on behalf of our characters, taking different story paths with, of course, different jokes. I think it’s a great fit for our show and will be a great way to officially complete the series.”

Going back to Radcliffe’s unknown role, Fey has said that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling was a model for Kimmy’s success in the final season. Kimmy realizes her dreams by publishing a children’s book and later seeing it made into a theme park in Florida.

“We talked about Kimmy having sort of a J.K. Rowling arc to her life, J.K. Rowling having come from being out of work and [after going through] some difficult things in her life, finding a whole life in this way as an author,” Fey said of Kimmy’s career storyline. “We thought it might be an interesting place for Kimmy’s unique experience, as someone who’s been through something so dark but also has a sense of childlike wonder and a desire to make the world a better place, that the kind of story she could come up with would be a huge success.”

The interactive special is said to release in 2020.
