The end of Season 6 saw both Piper and Blanca being granted early release. But unlike Piper, she was escorted out of the prison by ICE officers.
“[Showrunner Jenji Kohan] wanted to be able to tell stories about post-prison,” writer Brian Chamberlayne said in regards to Piper. “It wasn’t just a season-six end, it was partially about getting into the arc of where Piper goes. It’s about what is significant about the criminal justice system and what is significant about Piper’s story and journey, so there’s plenty to be told.”
Actress Laura Gomez also revealed that Blanca would be back for season 7.
“The fact that we are dealing with a situation so intense in our current political climate — it felt almost dangerous, to me. So I decided I was going to embrace that and use it for this character,” she said. “I remember getting goosebumps because it felt so relevant; that through Blanca, we’re going to get to see this crisis,” she continued. “It felt very important to me as a person, as well, that this character gets to inform an audience about this whole situation. I’m not exactly sure what’s going to happen, but I think we have a hint that we’re going to see a little bit of that in season seven.”
Also at the end of Season 6, we saw Taystee wrongfully charged with the death of C.O. Desi Piscatella. Actress Danielle Brooks says that Taystee’s story will be incredibly emotional.
“It’s about survival…So, for her, she’s trying to figure out, ‘Is life worth living?’ And I think the audience, as much as she’s toiling with that, I think they will be as frustrated at where it’s taking them emotionally. But at the end of the day, I think the whole thing is to continue to find ways to find your hope,” she said.
The show also hinted during interviews that some old faces may return for the final season. Producer Tara Herrman says there is a chance we may see characters that were absent last season due to the aftermath of the season 5 riot. And of course, there will be new characters as actress and comedian Iliana Inocencio is set to join the cast and Komal Charania is set to portray an ICE Detainee.
