‘Supergirl’ Recap ‘American Dreamer’

Supergirl Recap ‘American Dreamer’

Since Kara decided to hang up her cape, there’s a new hero in town. Nia has decided that somebody has to stand up to the criminals of National City (and protect aliens), using Dreamer to do just that. She’s gotten a hang of her powers, too, using a whole slew of new moves. While trying to stop what she thinks is a break-in at the bar, finds out that aliens have been using the spot as a refuge. They have nowhere to go and don’t feel safe. Now, they can’t even use the bar because the Sons of Liberty crash the party, led by Ben’s son George. Nia fights them off, but the aliens know that the Sons won’t stop until they’re gone.

Meanwhile, Kara is trying to go after Lex by writing an exposé. She uses some real detective work, following the money, and trying to figure out what Lex was doing while he was supposed to be in jail. This leads her to realize that L Corp was someone connected to Lex during that time. She confronts Lena, but things don’t go so well. Lena calls out Kara for not being a friend to her during these hard times. She makes a comment that Supergirl has been more supportive than her best friend. Lena tells Kara that she won’t be used for an exclusive.

After that hard hit, Kara doesn’t know what to do. She and Nia are both down, but then realize that what they need is each other. Kara has been so focused on trying to bring Lex to justice that she forgot what their true calling as heroes is to be. Above all, they inspire hope. Kara wants to do an exclusive interview with Nia as Dreamer. She can speak as both a human and an alien. They hack into the broadcast system and show the city the interview with Kara. Nia does a fantastic job, speaking from the heart. Of course, Lockwood isn’t too pleased and shows up at CatCo to arrest Kara and Nia for spreading “propaganda that inspires violence.” Brainy, Alex, and a newly-super-powered James show up to stop Lockwood. James demands that Lockwood leave without taking them in, saying that they have the right of freedom of the press.

Later, Kara apologizes to Lena, telling her that she has been absent and is deeply sorry. Lena was touched by Dreamer’s speech and reveals that she was working with Lex, but she had no idea this was going to happen. They decide to join forces and figure out the puzzle left in Lex’s wake. Eventually, they realize he posing as Sebastian Melmoth, a name taken by Oscar Wilde. Lena connects the dots, following the Wilde thread and figures out that Lex might be in Kaznia.

A few characters went through changes this week, most notably James. Because of the Haren-El used to save his life, James has started showing signs of super powers whenever he has a panic attack. He and Kelly work through his anxieties so that he doesn’t full lose control and hurt himself or others. Another character to experience a bit of growth is George. During the raid, he comes across one of his friends, and wonders why he never told him he was an alien. George starts to question his father’s agenda, but his mother tells him that it’s all for the best. I will be interested to see how he reacts when he learns that his mother was murdered by an alien.

Next week’s episode is entitled ‘Will the Real Miss Tessmacher Please Stand Up?”
