Gunn has confirmed the news himself as well with a touching post on social media.

Last July, Guardians franchise helmer James Gunn was abruptly fired from the third installment by Disney after a series of offensive tweets from nearly ten years ago were uncovered. Despite having apologized for the tweets long before he was hired by Disney, Gunn released another lengthy apology and received droves of support from both the cast and Hollywood in general. Deadline reports that his public apology and the way he handled the situation as well as multiple meetings with Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn are what resulted in the decision to reverse his firing. Gunn had already written the script for Vol. 3, which Disney and Marvel confirmed will be used.

Marvel Studios has decided to resume production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after Gunn completes Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros., which he signed on to write and direct back in October. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 & 2, which starred Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, and Michael Rooker, have collectively earned over $1.6 billion and become an integral story in the current Avengers phase. A majority of the characters appeared in the recent Avengers: Infinity War and are set to also appear in April’s Avengers: Endgame.
