Before Zack Snyder was an architect of the DC Extended Universe, before he was even making comicbook movies like 300 or Watchmen, he made a remake of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead back in 2004. He’s poised to make a return to the genre that launched his career with a forthcoming zombie movie made for Netflix.
The flick, titled Army of the Dead, evokes thoughts of that previous romp, but appears to be unrelated. The film had been with Warner Brothers since 2007, but languished in development hell for more than ten years before Snyder and his wife Deborah decided to make the movie under their new production company, Stone Quarry, for online streaming giant Netflix. Netflix apparently went to Warner Brothers to purchase the property, not exactly a common move for the online streamer.
I thought this was a good palate cleanser to really dig in with both hands and make something fun and epic and crazy and bonkers in the best possible way.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Army of the Dead, penned by Joby Harold from a story by Snyder himself, is “set amid a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, during which a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.” It will reunite Snyder with the man who handed him the keys to his first feature, Scott Steuber, now with Netflix. It sounds like a perfect match for Snyder, who will likely imbue the picture with his trademark frenetic action and stylized gore.
Snyder seems as excited to get back to the genre that launched his feature film career as his fans are to hear of his return to movies.
There are no handcuffs on me at all with this one…It will be the most…self-aware…balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen. No one’s ever let me completely loose [like this].
Snyder has stayed away from the spotlight for the most part since a family tragedy saw him walk away from his previous film, Justice League, in 2017. But he seems ready to return, and in blockbuster fashion.
