‘Aquaman’ Surpasses ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ to Become Highest-Grossing DC Film Ever

Aquaman is now officially king of the DC box office. The film accomplished the unthinkable this weekend when it surpassed The Dark Knight Rises to become the highest-grossing DC Universe film ever worldwide.

Deadline reports that the Jason Momoa-led film raked in over $1.09 billion this weekend with a whopping $774.2 million earned from the international market. Not only does the film sit atop DC’s earnings list, but the film has also become Warner Bros. third biggest movie ever globally.

In addition to Momoa, the film also stars Amber Heard (as Mera), Patrick Wilson (as the villainous Orm/Ocean Master), Temuera Morrison (as Tom Curry), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (as Black Manta), Nicole Kidman (as Queen Atlanna), Dolph Lundgren (as King Nereus) and Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe (as Nuidis Vulko).

Wan directs with Peter Safran producing along with Zack and Deborah Snyder, Rob Cowan, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

The official film synopsis reads as follows:

“From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.”
