‘Aquaman’ Reaches $1 Billion at the Global Box Office, Surpasses ‘The Dark Knight’

It officially happened! Warner Bros. and DC’s Aquaman has officially sailed into widely uncharted box office waters. Over the weekend, the film crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office becoming only the 3rd DC comics film to do so.

At the time of writing this article, Aquaman had also surpassed the earnings of The Dark Knight positioning the film as the second biggest DC superhero film ever. According to Deadline, the film was the 5th 2018 release to cross the $1 billion mark just behind Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Incredibles 2, and was the 5th title in Warner Bros. history to reach the earnings milestone.

Those involved with the film took some time to celebrate their amazing achievement. The official Aquaman social media pages shared a post thanking the fans for their support and urging others to catch the film before it leaves theaters.

Film star Jason Momoa posted to his Instagram saying, “BILLION DOLLAR UNDERDOG. From Baywatch to making what once was the most disrespected superhero into a billion dollar movie. No one gets to the top without the people that love them. My success is from my fans…”

Director James Wan took a moment to say several thank yous to everyone who made the production possible, from the crew, to the stars, to the fans. He posted several tweets conveying his heartfelt sentiments.

Aquaman has had massive success at the overseas box office and still has one more market to go. The film is set to open in Japan in the beginning of February.

In addition to Momoa, the film also stars Amber Heard (as Mera), Patrick Wilson (as the villainous Orm/Ocean Master), Temuera Morrison (as Tom Curry), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (as Black Manta), Nicole Kidman (as Queen Atlanna), Dolph Lundgren (as King Nereus) and Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe (as Nuidis Vulko).

Wan directs with Peter Safran producing along with Zack and Deborah Snyder, Rob Cowan, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

The official film synopsis reads as follows:

“From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.”
