‘Out Run’ Released on the Nintendo E-Shop As Part of the SEGA AGES Collection
Out Run, Sega’s incredibly successful 1986 arcade racer, is now available on the Nintendo Switch’s e-store for only $7.99.
This new release, named SEGA AGES Out Run, features motion controls and a new online ranking system. The original game was released in arcades back in 1986 to rave reviews. Created by designer Yu Suzuki and the Sega AM2 team, the game allowed players to race from a third person perspective through a variety of landscapes, all set to a great soundtrack.
For video game history buffs, Sega has released a few details about Out Run (Taken directly from their press release):
- Out Run was first conceived as a racing game called DEAD HEAT, where you drove a Formula One race car, before it became a driving simulator with a commercial car to help set it apart.
- Out Run was also modeled after the American cross-country road race seen in the film The Cannonball Run before planners Toki Ishii and Yu Suzuki switched gears to Europe due to a wider variety of landscapes.
- This SEGA AGES release contains tracks added for the 3DS version of Out Run along with all-new arranged versions of songs from the Genesis and Master System releases, such as MIDNIGHT HIGHWAY – PLAYBACK and even includes a chiptune version of RADIATION from Out Run 2006: Coast 2 Coast.
- If you enter a high score as the name “YU.” With the period and hold down the X button at the end of Stage 2, you will see a credit for legendary designer Yu Suzuki appear on screen!
Out Run is being released as part of Sega’s new SEGA AGES collection on the Nintendo e-shop which aims to bring classic Sega games to Nintendo consoles. Developed by M2, a Japanese developer known for high quality ports, the new collection hopes to introduce classic games to a new generation of players and to allow those who grew up with these games to re-experience them on a new console.
Both Gain Ground and Puyo Puyo will be added to the SEGA AGES line-up in February, complete with updates. Gain Ground will feature an All-Member Mode which unlocks all 20 characters for play and will also boast an Easy Mode for those who want a more casual gaming experience.
Puyo Puyo will feature online play and a new online ranking system to allow players to test their skills against a worldwide audience!
