Awkwafina Joins ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ Sequel

The cast of 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was already perfect, but Dwayne Johnson & Co. are stepping things up for its upcoming sequel. First, they added It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Danny DeVito to the cast and now Crazy Rich Asian’s scene-stealing Awkwafina is heading into the game.

DeVito’s casting was confirmed by Variety, but Awkwafina’s rumored casting, which was reported by multiple outlets, was actually confirmed by Johnson himself on Twitter.

[row]”She’s ready to play in JUMANJI! Welcome the super talented @awkwafina to our cast! She lit it up in “Crazy Rich Asians” and it’s gonna be so much fun workin’ with her. Can’t wait. And when @KevinHart4real annoys you on set, just do what I do and kick him in the balls. #JUMANJI,” Johnson tweeted.[/row]

Since the sequel is still in the early stages of development, not much is known about the plot or DeVito’s and Awkwafina’s role, but we do know that the entire cast is returning including Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. Jake Kasdan will also be returning as director and will co-write the script with Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner.

2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, updated the Robin Williams classic by having the plot take place inside the game rather than in the real world and it quickly became Sony’s second-biggest box officer earner with $943 million.
