New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, a remastered version of New Super Mario Bros. U which was previously released on the Nintendo Wii U, will feature a new playable character named Nabbit who cannot be hurt.

Nintendo of America announced via their Twitter that, “New #SuperMario Bros. U Deluxe players can play as Nabbit, who is unaffected by enemies and takes no damage from them. He’s a great character to practice with! Give Nabbit a spin when the game launches 1/11 only on #NintendoSwitch!”

This is a trend for Nintendo who seems to truly want to make their games accessible to all, possibly after hearing the backlash from more casual gamers who found some of their releases a bit too hard to complete. We first saw a nearly invincible character added to a game last year when the remastered version of Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze was released with the option to play as Funky Kong. Funky Kong used a surf board which allowed him to ride over traps and some enemies without taking damage, boasted extra health when compared to other characters and featured other special abilities which allowed him to essentially speed run levels. Funky Kong was fundamentally an easy mode for the game, which many welcomed due to the Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze’s sometimes extreme difficulty.

Looks like the reception that Funky Kong received led to Nintendo wanting to do the same for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, except this time the new character is invincible. While it may seem extreme to you for Nintendo to add in a character which removes all risk from the game, just remember that there are some who may just want to just see what the game has to offer, or those who want to run through the levels a few times before fully attempting them. The addition of Nabbit is a great option for those gamers who may want to experience the game without the stress of failure.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe will be released on January 11th, 2019 for the Nintendo Switch console and will contain New Super Luigi U as well, which was originally released as DLC for the core game.

Do you agree with Nintendo’s decision to add in an easy mode to these games or do you believe that ruins the challenge? Let us know in the comments!
