‘Outlander’ Preview: 5 Hearts’ Cores We’re Worried About In “The Deep Heart’s Core”

It doesn’t seem possible that we’re already up to episode 10 this season. That means that there are just four episodes remaining this season. Four episodes for all these devastatingly deep storylines to be wrapped up. Four episodes for all these characters’ fates to be revealed. Four episodes for us to discover just where all these scenes in the opening credits come from. And four episodes for us to savor and analyze again and again while we wait for the next season. Which brings us to today’s post- the first of many analyses of this week’s episode. The title is, “The Deep Heart’s Core,” so we’re looking at five hearts whose cores we are worried about.

  1. Jamie. There’s a lot going on for our favorite Highlander recently. His daughter shows up, he learns that he and Claire will die in a fire, he learns that Bree was raped and is now pregnant, and he’s just beaten up the wrong man (although he doesn’t know that part yet). As we said in our recap last week, secrets always come out in the Outlander world. When Jamie’s actions come to light, what effect will it have on his fragile relationship with Bree? Or with Claire, who knows the whole truth?
  2. Roger. He may be #2 on this list, but Roger is really our main concern this week. We have no idea what’s happened to him, or if he’s even still alive following Jamie’s attack on him. All we know is that Young Ian took him somewhere, with orders to not kill the man himself. Is Roger’s heart still beating? And will it lead him back to Bree?
  3. Brianna. Speaking of Bree, she is without a doubt in the toughest spot of everyone. She is the one who endured the rape, she is the one who is pregnant, and she is the one who believes that she drove Roger away. She is struggling with shame and regret and physical pain, all while trying to connect to the father that she’s never met. It’s an incredible load for one person to bear, and even having her family around her will not make it easier to heal.
  4. Bree’s baby. The elephant in the room is actually a rather small fetus. Bree has to make some very difficult decisions this week and she has to do it by herself. She does not know if the baby she is carrying is Roger’s or Stephen Bonnet’s, and there’s no DNA testing available in the 1760s. She also has to decide where she will stay. Will she remain in the past with her parents? Or will she risk traveling back to her own time, where she believes Roger is?
  5. Stephen Bonnet. Ok, we’re not actually worried about Bonnet’s heart. We all know it’s black all the way through and we’re not hoping for a grand redemption storyline here. We just want to make sure we get to watch what happens to him if Jamie finds out what he did to Bree. She swore Claire to secrecy, but will that promise be kept? Or will it come out in the wash with all the other dirty laundry?
