Hulu’s ‘The Act’: First Looks

The story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother, Dee Dee, is one that has fascinated people for quite some time.

Joey King and Patricia Arquette star in The Act, a Hulu true-crime seasonal anthology series with season 1 centering around Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

The story follows Gypsy Blanchard (King), a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her mother (Arquette). Her journey to independence ultimately leads to murder.

King posted a first look photo on her Instagram.

Dee Dee kept Gypsy prisoner by making her believe she had several illnesses.

The first season of the series is based on the BuzzFeed article, “Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom To Be Murdered,” by Michelle Dean.

“Getting into the emotion and getting into the character of Gypsy was something I was so excited to tackle, but I was also admittedly super-nervous for,” King tells EW“This is the first time I’ve ever gotten the privilege to really, really transform myself for a role.” That transformation included wearing fake teeth and shaving her head. “Transforming into Gypsy was one of the most challenging but most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” she says.

Arquette is equally ready to dive into character. Dee Dee, while in the wrong, still has a humanity about her.

The series focuses on the emotional complexity of these people. Dean, who wrote the Buzzfeed article mentioned above says “I’ve spent three years listening to people tell me how crazy they think the people at the heart of this story are, and they were never that crazy to me. They always seemed like human beings who had an emotional logic to what they did. Horrible things, but they did them out of truly human impulses. We made that into kind of a mission statement: We want people to understand the people behind the act.”

Season 1 also stars Chloe Sevigny, AnnaSophia Robb, and Calum Worthy.

The eight-episode series premieres March 20 on Hulu.
