Surprise Netflix Film ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’ Trailer Released

The Netflix dark anthology series, created by Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror, has just launched a new trailer, however it seems to be a 90 minutes length feature film special. Just one day ahead of its debut titled Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. The synopsis of the film reads, “In 1984, a young programmer begins to question reality as he adapts a sprawling fantasy novel into a video game and soon faces a mind mangling challenge. Welcome back.” Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk), Will Poulter (The Maze Runner), and Asim Chaudry star in the film.

Back in October THR reported the Black Mirror series plans to go interactive for their fifth season. Though there isn’t much information they said, “Charlie Brooker is working on a choose-your-own-adventure path where the interactive narrative would allow viewers to pick how the story will unfold as they watch.” This is a similar concept used in choice making video games (for example Telltale video games) where we choose what happens next in the episode. Though Netflix has not released any dates yet on when season five will premiere, it seems Bandersnatch could in fact be the interactive project they’ve been working on but if not, it will at least give the fans something to enjoy until season five drops.

So far, the 90 minutes special seems to have a retro feel as the music of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Relax plays throughout the trailer. There are references to changing your past, present, and future within the trailer and mentions of “You’re not in control.” Along with a couple easter eggs here and there for the fans.

Something to note the term ‘Bandersnatch’ is mentioned as a fictional creature in an 1872 novel by Lewis Carroll’s “Through the Looking Glass.” Whether this will tie into the film is yet to be known until tomorrow. Netflix’s Black Mirror event Bandersnatch will debut Friday, Dec. 28.
