This week, SyFy’s zombie apocalypse drama Z Nation will be ending its television run after 5 seasons. The series which stars Kellita Smith, Keith Allan, DJ Qualls, Anastasia Baranova, Russell Hodgkinson, Nat Zang, Joseph Gatt, Emilio Rivera, and Matt Cedeño will air its season 5 finale on Friday, December 28th and has not been renewed for a sixth season.

Over the weekend, Z Nation producer David Michael Latt announced the news via a live periscope video on Twitter. In the below video, Latt stands with cast and crew members and says, “We wanted to tell you face to face … that we were not renewed for Season 6. We’re stopping at Season 5. We’re very sad, but we’re also really grateful with the opportunities that we had on the show.”

Latt then added, “This is not the end of anything. This is just the beginning of a lot of things.” Check out the full video below.

Fans of the series have already launched an outreach to other networks and platforms, mainly Netflix, asking for their beloved show to be saved. At this point, Netflix seems like the show’s best bet. The streaming giant has already picked up a spin-off series from the Z Nation creators, so the show would be right at home if Netflix were to pick it up. Only time will now tell if Z Nation will come back to life on another network.

At the end of Z Nation‘s run, the show will have aired for a total of 68 episodes on SyFy. The official synopsis for the series reads as follows: “Z Nation follows a team of everyday heroes, led by Lieutenant Warren (Kellita Smith), during their epic struggle to save humanity. Season 4 begins with a mind-bending jump in time. Murphy and Warren find themselves alive in Zona, the zombie-free playground for billionaires. Meanwhile, the rest of our heroes are fighting alongside the last of the humans against the mutated Zombie Virus and the unkillable “MAD-Z’s.” Warren’s mysterious dream of a black rainbow and flesh-eating black rain propels the season forward and puts our heroes in the middle of an even worse Zompocalypse. Here they will have to battle Jugalo Zombies and find the Zombified President of the United States – or at least his thumb.”

The season 5 finale (and now the series finale) will air on Friday, December 28th at 9 PM EST.
