Angel Parker, star of Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ talks big reveals in first half of Season 2 (Exclusive Interview)

This interview contains spoilers from Season 2 of Runaways

If you thought your parents were the bane of your existence and total buzz kills, try swapping places with six Los Angeles teenagers whose parents are quite literally minions of evil– or should we say Jonah (Julian McMahon). Hulu’s original series Runaways returns December 21st on Hulu, and Fan Fest News has the scoop on what’s to come in the long-awaited season two of the hit Marvel series. Runaways centers around a group of teens, who despite their very different backgrounds, ban together to uncover L.A.’s most dastardly secret– which is conventionally ran by their criminal parents, collectively known as the Pride.

Angel Parker, who plays Catherine Wilder, a cunning lawyer and mischievous member of the not-so-charitable organization, chatted with us about the new season, new threats, and what’s to come for not only the parents, but the runaways as well. From Catherine’s decisions to protect her family, to swapping places with one of the runaways, here’s all the juicy tidbits of what’s on the horizon for fans of the Marvel series…

MCKENZIE MORRELL: Hi Angel, thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for Fan Fest News regarding Season 2 of Marvel’s Runaways. To kick things off, can you tell those who might not have seen the show yet a little bit about it, and the character you play.

ANGEL PARKER: I play Catherine Wilder, mom to Alex. He and his friends find out that their parents are members of a not so charitable organization called Pride. When they discover our evil deeds, they ‘run away’, and ban to fight against us. Catherine is one of the leaders of Pride and will do anything to get her son back… even cross lines she knows she shouldn’t.

MM: How in tune were/are you with the Marvel universe when you landed this gig? You have a son, whom I’m sure is stoked his mom gets to play this well-known character.

AP: I honestly didn’t know much about the Marvel Universe when I first got the call. I needed a crash course in all things Marvel, and my son was happy to help. We have since watched every movie, most of the shows, and of course, we both have read all of the “Runaways” comics.

MM: I have already seen the first 5 episodes of the new season, and I would say that Catherine is really the brains/brawn within the Wilder family. Would you agree?

AP: Yes, but I would also say that Geoffrey is both brains and brawn too. We just have different ways of accomplishing our goals. Catherine has been making savvy moves since they first met. She will always lead her family forward, by any means necessary.

MM: What motivates Catherine? She seems dead set on eliminating Geoffrey’s past from the table. Especially now, since she killed and framed Darius for Destiny’s murder.

AP: Her motivation has always been her family and everything they have built. She will not lose it. When it seems to be slipping away, her desperate grasp gets tighter… eventually around a trigger.

MM: Now that Alex, and Geoffrey realize the lengths your character will go to protect her family/social standing– how do you think that will change their relationship moving forward?

AP:I think Catherine hopes it will become the new normal. She wants to move past it. She slowly realizes that things will never be the same for them. Geoffrey sees this as a betrayal of trust and I don’t know if Alex will ever forgive her.

MM: Do you think there is anyone that your character actually trusts?

AP: No. She has a deep love and respect for Geoffrey, but I think Catherine only truly trusts herself.

MM: Between Jonah’s alien abilities, Tina’s magical staff, and the other parents with their talents, what do you think is Catherine’s greatest asset? How does she use that quality/power to stand out in the group?

AP: She’s smart and savvy. Catherine can read people and stay two steps ahead. She’s also ruthless when she speaks her mind. You always know where she stands.

MM: Out of all the parents on the show (besides her husband), who do you think Catherine would choose to align herself with and why?

AP: Tina would be the smartest choice. Keep your enemies close, right? She is just as focused and calculating as Catherine. I think they would be unstoppable. Too bad they can’t stand each other.

MM: The parents seem pretty occupied with finding their kids, yet there’s not a whole lot of mention regarding Jonah and the impending apocalypse… why aren’t they taking this unknown alien threat more seriously.

AP: JUST. YOU. WAIT.

MM: The show is made to be binge-watched– what type of shows do you devour in one sitting?

AP: I love shows like “House of Cards” and “The Crown.” “Game of Thrones” too. Most recently, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Shows with big character development that builds and unravels over time.

MM: If you could trade places with one of the Runaways, who would it be, and why?

AP: Old Lace! Her loyalty and connection with Gert are so interesting to me. She really is the 7thrunaway. You start to care about her. She could also rip out your throat in seconds. That’s a pretty rad quality.

MM: I like to add my signature question to each of my interviews– if you were to construct a donut based on Catherine Wilder’s personality, what kind of donut would it be and what toppings would be on it?

AP: Well there’s nothing sweet about Catherine, but I could guarantee it would be filled with blood red jelly.

MM: Lastly, why should the audience tune in on December 21st? What makes Season 2 worth binge-watching?

AP: It’s a bigger show and the special effects are incredible. Watching the runaways grow into their power is something the fans will definitely want to binge.

MM: Thank you again for chatting with Fan Fest News. We can’t wait to see what the rest of Season 2 has to offer.

AP: You’re welcome. It’s so good. I can’t wait to binge it myself!
