‘The Good Doctor’ Creator David Shore Shares a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Freddie Highmore Directing

Hey, The Good Doctor fans! Are you ready for some more Freddie this season? Sure you are!

Earlier in the year, news broke that The Good Doctor star and producer Freddie Highmore would be taking on a more active role behind-the-scenes of the series. Highmore has already stepped into the writers’ room during the first half of season two. He wrote the season two premiere episode. Now, he’s stepping behind the camera and taking on the role of director.

Just last week, series creator David Shore gave fans a glimpse behind-the-scenes and into Highmore’s unconventional approach to directing an upcoming episode. Shore first teased The Good Doctor fandom with a quick picture of a classic director’s chair donning Highmore’s name written on the back support. Check out the post below.

Knowing the fans would want to see more of the star to help tide them over during this long, winter break, Shore shared a more intimate look at Highmore’s directing. This time, he posted a photo showing Highmore examining a scene on a playback monitor. Instead of sitting in the director’s chair, pictured in Shore’s first post, Highmore can be seen squatting on the floor, looking through the back of the chair, perhaps to ensure he’s getting the exact perfect viewing angle. Check out Highmore’s unique stance below.

Highmore has proved himself an excellent episode writer as well. The season two premiere was filled with high emotions, drama, humor and more. He certainly has a knack for behind-the-scenes work as well as his on-camera acting. In fact, this wouldn’t be the first time that Highmore has stepped behind the scenes of a series. Previously, in addition to starring as Norman Bates, he served as a writer on two episodes and director for another on Bates Motel.

While we’re not quite sure yet when Highmore’s episode will air, series star Nicholas Gonzalez did confirm which episode Highmore will be directing. According to Gonzalez, Highmore will be sitting in that director’s chair (or just underneath it, apparently), for the fifteenth episode of the second season.

The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital with autism and savant syndrome. In addition to Highmore, the series also stars Antonia Thomas as Dr. Claire Browne, Nicholas Gonzalez as Dr. Neil Melendez, Hill Harper as Dr. Marcus Andrews, Richard Schiff as Dr. Aaron Glassman, Tamlyn Tomita as Allegra Aoki, Christina Chang as Dr. Audrey Lim, Fiona Gubelmann as Dr. Morgan Reznick, Will Yun Lee as Dr. Alex Park and Paige Spara as Lea. The series is created by David Shore who also serves executive producer along with Daniel Dae Kim, David Kim, Erin Gunn, and Sebastian Lee.

The Good Doctor airs Monday nights on ABC at 10/9c and will return with all new episodes on January 14th, 2019.
