Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan to star in ‘Ammonite’

Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan will star in romance-drama Ammonite.

The film is set in a UK coastal town in the 1840s, and will follow the unlikely romance between real-life paleontologist Mary Anning (Winslet) and a wealthy London woman (Ronan) to whom she must unexpectedly play nursemaid.

Anning is credited with some of the most significant fossil findings in history that contradicted previous biblical assumptions about how the world was made, discovering full skeletons of creatures like ichthyosaurs, the Plesiosaurus, and the Pterodactylus. This earned Anning the respect of contemporary scientists, and she was named the first Honorary Member of the new Dorset County Museum. She died of breast cancer in 1847.

The film comes from God’s Own Country writer-director Francis Lee and will be produced by Widows and Lion producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman along with Lady Macbeth’s Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly. Production will begin in March.
