Gwendoline Christie Says ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Should Prepare for an Emotional Goodbye

Heading into 2019, you’d be hard pressed to find a series with more hype than the upcoming final season of Game of Thrones. Now that we are only about four months away from the show’s return, the cast and crew are slowly becoming more vocal about what eager fans can expect. Of course, in typical Game of Thrones fashion, what they have to say always tends to lean more towards the grim and despairing side of things.

While promoting her new film Welcome to Marwen, Gwendoline Christie, who plays the lovable Brienne of Tarth on the show, stepped up to the plate to warn fans that this coming season is going to rock their worlds and probably traumatize them, which…fair.

[row]“You’re going to need therapy…I think just the show ending is going to send all of the world into professional help,” she told EW.[/row]

Christie isn’t wrong in the slightest. Game of Thrones has been the most popular series on cable since its premiere in 2011. It has won countless prestigious awards, inspired college courses, and brought millions of people together from all over the world. It’s going to be a devastating day for pop culture when its series finale eventually airs.

[row]”I think it’s [ending] going to make me incredibly emotional. We’re all emotional about the fact that this is the end, and this is the end of something incredibly significant for all of us, and it’s been a truly incredible thing to be a part of,” Christie continued.[/row]

While there haven’t been too many details revealed about the specifics of the season, Game of Thrones’ co-executive producer Bryan Cogman also spoke with Entertainment Weekly earlier this year and dropped some minor hints for fans about what to expect from the farewell season.

[row]“It’s about all of these disparate characters coming together to face a common enemy, dealing with their own past, and defining the person they want to be in the face of certain death…It’s an incredibly emotional haunting bittersweet final season and I think it honors very much what [author George R.R. Martin] set out to do — which is flipping this kind of story on its head.”[/row]

Other members of the cast have also been teasing some little nuggets about season 8 over the past year as well. Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark told Digital Spy earlier this year that the season is certainly “unpredictable”.

[row]“It really is so unpredictable the way that [the series] ends up. For me, without giving anything away, I was satisfied with how unpredictable the show’s ending really is.”[/row]

Jamie Lannister’s Nikolaj Coster-Waldau told The Wrap that after reading the series finale script, he was pleased with how everything came together:

[row]I read it, and I wrote [creators] Dan [Weiss] and David [Benioff] and said I don’t think they could have done a better job…and when I read it, some of the parts of it I’d get, and other parts of it were just completely shocking and surprising… Here all the pieces fit into this massive jigsaw puzzle.”[/row]

Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, had a bit more of an ominous comment about the finale:

[row]“It f–ked me up. Knowing that is going to be a lasting flavor in someone’s mouth of what Daenerys is…”[/row]

But, one piece of definitive good news? Ghost will be back!
