Jason Momoa Says Henry Cavill is ‘Absolutely Not’ Leaving Superman

Just a few months ago, the DC fandom was rocked with news stating that Henry Cavill was reportedly not returning to his role as Superman. Now, it seems that his Justice League costar, Jason Momoa is setting the record straight once and for all.

During Wednesday’s Los Angeles premiere of Momoa’s latest DC flick, Aquaman, the actor was asked point-blank by Entertainment Tonight about both Cavill and Ben Affleck (who most recently assumed the role of Batman in the DCEU) not returning to their roles. While Momoa did not specifically address Affleck’s rumored departure, he did adamantly speak on Cavill’s current status.

Responding to the question on whether or not Cavil is leaving his Superman role, Momoa said:

“I just talked to Henry. He’s absolutely not. He loves the character. He’s not. One hundred percent.”

When the reporter pushed a little further and questioned him again by saying, “so, that’s not going to happen,” Momoa again responded firmly, “no, it’s absolutely not.”

News that Henry Cavill is reportedly finished playing Superman in future films first broke in September of this year. The information reportedly came from insider sources who claimed that the studios are looking to reset the DC cinematic universe and focus more on their upcoming Supergirl film rather than future installments involving Superman.

At the time, Cavill responded to the rumor with a bizarre video clip posted to his Instagram. The video showed Cavill wearing a Krypton Lifting Team t-shirt slowly raising and lowering a Superman action figure while Johann Strauss II’s classical tune Blue Danube Waltz (sung by barking dogs) played in the background.

Warner Bros. responded to the rumors by issuing the following statement saying, “We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged. Additionally, we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films.”

While Momoa’s answer leaves little room for alternate interpretation, we’ll just have to wait and see if Cavill will be back as the Man of Steel again. In the meantime, he certainly has his calendar full. Cavill’s next project is playing the lead role in the upcoming Netflix series The Witcher.
