BB-8 Might Get A Droid Sidekick In ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

We may soon be opening our hearts to a new robot friend.

BB-8 definitely won everyone’s heart in the Star Wars sequel Trilogy. Fans can mostly agree on that.  He has become the obvious one to succeed R2-D2. Fans were given a taste of that when D2 was out of commission in The Force Awakens.

According to Making Star Wars, the spirited little ball robot could soon acquire a little sidekick of his own in Star Wars: Episode IX.According to the article, “Dio,” or D.O” will be the new addition to the resistance. Somebody at Pinewood Studios in London allegedly compared the droid to the shape of a megaphone, and says it’s an outcast who treats BB-8 as it’s parent or guardian.

Although this is simply a rumor right now, it would make sense. There can never be enough lovable droids in the Star Wars Universe (arguably). Droids can be turned to fun Disney sellables though so it’s a good business plan. And let’s be real, we will all buy the merch.

Many characters will be returning for Star Wars: Episode IX including the main cast Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Kelly Marie Tran, and John Boyega. Mark Hamill is also returning to reprise the role of Luke. Fans were happy to hear that Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher will appear as Lando Calrissian and Leia (via archival footage) as well. It’s looking more and more like these appearances won’t be featured as heavily as fans are hoping.

We can look forward to scenes featuring Matt Smith, Kerri Russell, Richard E. Grant and Ackie in the about 2 hour and 15 minute film. Rey, Finn, Rose Kylo Ren and Poe also have to take up a good chunk of it. The film, after all, will star Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver in the forefront. Another creature who is rumored to appear much less are Porgs. Apparently, they’ll be featured little to none in the upcoming trilogy ender.

What we know for sure is that this will be a forever farewell to Luke, Leia and Lando.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
