‘Supergirl’ Recap ‘Elseworlds, Pt. 3’

Supergirl Recap ‘Elseworlds, Pt. 3’

This year’s crossover event wrapped up on Supergirl last night, finding our heroes trapped within Deegan’s rewritten reality, and this time, he thought bigger. Oliver and Barry are known as the Trigger Twins and are some of the most notorious villains in Central City. To make matters even worse, Deegan has rewritten himself as Superman. Kara is locked away in DEO/S.T.A.R. Labs under the watchful eye of Diggle, Killer Frost, and Earth-1 Alex. Oliver and Barry head to a seedy bar to locate Cisco, hoping that he can still vibe. Cisco is a crime boss, and yes, he still has his powers. “How do you think I got all this money?” he asks Oliver and Barry. They vibe to Earth-38, crashing in on Clark and Lois in the Fortress of Solitude.

Deegan Superman comes to Kara, telling her that she is an interesting case. She isn’t anywhere in his book, so he can’t rewrite her. Instead, he’ll just keep her locked up and try to learn all he can about her. While trapped, Kara reaches out to Alex, who, in this world, is incredibly closed off. She tortures Kara with a sound wave, and Kara starts spouting words that she and Alex both learned during a camping trip with their parents. Alex recognizes the words and stops. What follows is a really great moment between the two as Kara talks about her Alex and the bond they share. One of the best things about Supergirl is their sisterhood and it was great that Kara got to have an emotional moment akin to Barry/Iris and Oliver/Felicity this crossover. Alex softens a bit and lets Kara go free.

Oliver, Barry, Clark, and Cisco return to their Earth and the final battle begins. It’s Superman vs. Superman as they grapple over the book, and it was a really great fight scene. There was even a Bizarro Easter Egg, which was fun. Clark ends up getting the book and is able to rewrite Oliver, Barry, and Kara. With their powers restored, it’s time to end Deegan’s reign. Unfortunately, he has the book back and is trying to change reality again, which could have catastrophic ramifications. Barry throws out the idea of slowing down time. If he and Kara move at Mach 7 in opposite directions, they can stop the Earth’s rotation. Clark tells them that when he looked in the book, he saw them doing just that. Both died. Barry and Kara both accept their fate and speed away. Oliver, however, won’t let that stand.

While Clark fights Superman, Oliver appeals to Monitor. He tells Monitor that he isn’t there to test their strength, he’s there to see if they are good enough. Oliver then says that he wouldn’t be much of a good if he let the two most selfless, true heroes die. He strikes some sort of deal with Monitor that save Barry and Kara’s lives, but we don’t know the extent of that deal. Barry and Kara slow the Earth’s rotation, allowing Oliver to get in position and fire an arrow into the book, ending Deegan’s plans. And just like that, it’s all over. For now, at least. In the final scene, Oliver gets a phone call from Batwoman, who tells him that Deegan has made a very powerful friend in Arkham. This “friend” is Psycho-Pirate and he is telling Deegan that this is only the beginning. Cue the reveal that next year’s crossover event will be ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths.’ Oh, boy.

There were a lot of good moments in the final episode of the crossover, but all the praise has to go to Stephen Amell when he confronts Monitor. That whole scene was dripping with emotion as Oliver admits that the darkness in him doesn’t make him the hero he should be. He pleads for the lives of those who don’t deserve to die. Yet in all this, Oliver shows who he truly is. Oliver has always been selfless and will do everything for those he cares about, and that’s probably what Monitor was trying to get him to realize. In the end, he isn’t controlled by his darkness. That’s something this whole crossover has been leading to, from him being Barry to making up with Felicity to actually smiling and having fun fighting bad guys. Oliver is a true hero, even if he doesn’t feel like he is. I also have to give a shout out to Tyler Hoechlin. He is such a good Clark Kent/Superman and I wish that they could find a way to keep him around. Him and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane were so much fun and had such great chemistry. I’m so glad they were able to be a part of this year’s event.
