Watch the First Trailer for ‘Watership Down’ Starring John Boyega and James McAvoy

On Tuesday, BBC One and Netflix unveiled the first trailer for their upcoming animated miniseries adaptation of Watership Down.

At first glance, this may appear to be a happy story about fluffy bunnies, but those familiar with the original classic story know that could not be further from the truth. In fact, miniseries star John Boyega (Star Wars) probably said it best in his Instagram post when he said, “This isn’t about cute rabbits. It’s kind of messed up.”

The miniseries is based on Richard Adams’ bestselling novel first published in 1972. The story has been adapted for the screen by Tom Bidwell and directed by Noam Murro, this tale of adventure, courage, and survival follows a band of rabbits as they flee the certain destruction of their home.

The new animated miniseries has some serious star power lending their voices. In addition Boyega, the series also stars James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, and Ben Kingsley, just to name a few. Check out the first trailer for the upcoming series below.

The official synopsis from Netflix reads as follows:

“Beloved novel Watership Down will be reinterpreted into a four-part animated mini-series set to air in 2018. Set in the idyllic rural landscape of southern England, this tale of adventure, courage, and survival follows a band of rabbits on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey forth from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, towards a promised land and a more perfect society.”

Watership Down will be available on Netflix starting December 23rd and it will also air on BBC One in the U.K. from December 22nd and 23rd.
