Tom Payne: It’s Possible Jesus Could Return to ‘The Walking Dead’ in a Flashback

Fan Fest San Jose took place at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center December 1st and 2nd and cast members from The Walking Dead were in attendance.

On Sunday, Jesus himself, Tom Payne, took to the panel stage to answer some fan questions. This was Payne’s first panel with Walker Stalker Con since his character Jesus met his untimely demise on The Walking Dead‘s mid-season finale last week.

While battling what they think is just another herd, Jesus is shocked when one of the walkers reacts to his attempted attack and ducks under the swipe of his weapon. Then, in the blink of an eye, the walker (which we now know was not a walker at all, but one of the Whisperers), Jesus was stabbed through the back.

During his panel at Fan Fest San Jose, Payne was asked on whether or not we could potentially see Jesus come back to life, possibly in a flashback. In the show’s ninth season, the series experienced a massive 6-year time jump, and viewers have no idea what happened during that timeframe. Payne could neither confirm nor deny Jesus returning, but what he did say certainly will have fans talking during the mid-season break. He said:

“I can’t tell you if it’s true or not. When I left the show, I was like, ‘Yay! Now I don’t have to keep secrets anymore!’ But no. There are still some secrets I still have to keep. There are mysteries such as the X on Michonne and Daryl’s backs, and what happened with Maggie and Michonne, and all those things happened over the 6-year time jump on the show, so I could imagine Jesus was involved.”

Jesus’s death was one of the most shocking of the series so far, so the fact that he could potentially come back an still be a part of the story should help ease the pain of grieving fans.

Payne also addressed the possibility that we might see a walker version of Jesus when the series returns in February. When asked if he wanted to come back as a walker, Payne said no, but pointed out a pretty important detail which viewers should keep in mind. He said:

“We’ll see in the next episode if it happens, and you’ll be like, ‘Oh, he said he didn’t want to.’ But, nobody has stabbed him in the head yet.”

That’s 100% true. At the end of the mid-season finale, no one has stabbed Jesus in the head to stop him from turning. Could we see a walker Jesus when The Walking Dead returns? Could we see Jesus return in flashbacks showing the storyline of the 6-year time jump? We’ll find out for sure when The Walking Dead returns with new episodes on February 10th on AMC.
