The Walking Dead: How The Whisperers Caused This Week’s Chilling Death

Caution: This post contains spoilers from episode 9×08 of The Walking Dead, Evolution.

Fans were given quite a scare during the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead Sunday night when our beloved characters find themselves forced to hide from the walkers in a cemetery. Now, one of the season’s biggest mysteries is solved, and the revelation is spine-chilling.

It also leads to the death of a fan favorite character, Jesus.

Before that, they were able to save Eugene from the barn an exhausted Rosita was able to hide him in. He was hidden in a trap door, and as he climbs out and brushes off the dust, he alerts Jesus and Aaron to the unnatural behavior of the walkers. He says they are looking for him and that they’ll be back.

Sure enough, he’s right. The Whisperer herd returns in full force, and they’re headed towards the barn.

That’s when the group gets cornered and climbs into a nearby cemetery, hoping to hide from the herd. The herd locates them and surrounds them. They whisper and seem to not attack as walkers usually would.

Suddenly a few walkers begin the attack, and Jesus goes in to protect his friends. One of the walkers rips out a knife and stabs Jesus. “You are where you do not belong.” He whispers in Jesus’s ear as he dies.

At that moment, it’s clear that the walkers aren’t actually walkers. They give name to the what The Whisperers are in the comics, a relentless specter in the form of walkers who whisper. At the end of the episode, Daryl cuts a fleshy walker skin mask off of the normal face of a man, who is now dead.

We’ve seen our crew try to blend into the walker herds in the past, but now humans are taking “camouflage” to the next level. And we are left wondering, why? Why is their mission to track people down and kill them in cold blood?

The episode leaves off with Michonne, Aaron and Daryl completely surrounded by the Whisperers, and Dog caught in his own circle of them.

How do you think their group will get out of this one? And do you know the motivation behind The Whisperers?

The Walking Dead will return for the second half of its 8th season in February 2019.
