Get ready to see Jack Reacher in a much more intimate environment. According to Deadline, there is a TV series in the works starring the action hero.
Jack Reacher began as a book series by Lee Child, and then came the Paramount films starring Tom Cruise. Child is now saying that the series coming and will not star Cruise. In addition, there will be no more films starring Cruise either.
2012’s Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back were produced by Skydance and Cruise Wagner, and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Skydance would return to co-produce the series along with Paramount Television. The two companies recently teamed up for the similar and successful Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series starring John Krasinski.
Child says Reacher will to be played by a new actor rather than Tom Cruise, one who better fits the large, intimidating and burly character he wrote about in the Reacher books. It’s not that Child doesn’t think Cruise is a good actor, he told BBC recently, “Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality.”
He went on to say,
“I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He’s a really, really nice guy. We had a lot of fun. But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is… So what I’ve decided to do is – there won’t be any more movies with Tom Cruise. Instead we’re going to take it to Netflix or something like that. Long-form streaming television, with a completely new actor.”
He also added, “We’re rebooting and starting over and we’re going to try and find the perfect guy.”
Right now though, the project is still finding its story, but there are 23 Reacher novels and more short stories to pull from.
Director Christopher McQuarrie worked on the first film, which made $218.3 million, and its sequel brought in $162 million.
