‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Is Now the Second-Highest Grossing Music Biopic

To no one’s surprise, Bohemian Rhapsody has become a real champion of the box office this year! After just three weekends, the film starring Rami Malek as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury has nearly made its way to the top of the list of highest-grossing music biopics.

With a current gross of $127.8 million domestically, Bohemian Rhapsody now stands as the second highest-grossing music biopic of all time, bumping 2005’s Walk the Line, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, to third place with $119 million. 2015’s Straight Outta Compton still holds the number 1 spot with $161 domestically. Internationally,  Bohemian Rhapsody has already made a whopping $256 million, which pushes the film’s worldwide gross to $384 million. Despite just a $52 million budget, Bohemian Rhapsody doesn’t seem to show any signs of slowing down as Hollywood heads into the thick of Oscar season.

While Malek shines as the late Freddie Mercury in the film, Bohemian tells the story of the genesis of one of music’s greatest rock bands of all time and the journey they embarked on that led them to their iconic performance at the 1985 Live Aid. The film currently holds a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 92% audience ranking. Malek’s performance has been consistently praised by both critics and audiences, placing him as a frontrunner in the Oscar’s Best Actor category.

Other films in the top 10 of Box Office Mojo’s list of top-grossing music biopics include 2004’s Ray, which starred Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles, 1980’s Loretta Lynn biopic Coal Miner’s Daughter, and 2018’s I Can Only Imagine.

So, congrats to the “Killer Queen” Bohemian Rhapsody! Have you seen the musical biopic yet? If not, be sure to check it out in theaters now!
