Kenan Thompson is One of The Best Parts of ‘Dr. Suess’ The Grinch’ Movie

When I initially heard they were going to remake this Dr. Seuss story into its third existing film, I thought, “Hmm.”

The brand new revamped Grinch movie was released last week, and it is definitely a cute take on the fuzzy Christmas hating Grinch we all still love. They’ve tweaked the story just a bit, which is a good thing. Here we have a light, fluffy romp in the world of Dr. Suess, which is most likely what he intended it to be. Although it has just as much heart, it’s a far cry from the darker live-action film starring Jim Carrey in the year 2000. We also can’t forget about the short and sweet original animated film How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966). This new, creatively re imagined film will surely make its mark as a must-watch for future Christmasses to come.

This year, Whoville is being challenged to make things 3 times bigger than they ever have been for the holidays, which means the Whos have decorated extra this year. They fly in a giant Christmas tree that could potentially consume the annual tree in New York City’s Rockefeller Center.

Unlike the live-action version of the film, this one is based much less on Cindy Lou Who and her family, and more on the Grinch and his relationship with his dog Max and their newfound reindeer pal. It also focuses on their journey to steal Christmas.

It also contains a whole lot less hate and mystery about the Grinch than its predecessor. It’s almost as though they accept where he’s chosen to live in mountains, and aren’t afraid of him at all.

The Who (who) really steals the show is brand new Dr. Seuss character, Mr. Bricklebaum.

He’s voiced by Kenan Thompson, and he is everything that the Grinch is not. He loves Christmas and he’s determined to follow the rules this year, that Christmas is to be 3 times bigger than ever.

When he sees the Grinch, he calls him “Grinchy Grinch”, and laughs at his salty, Christmas hating comments as if they’re the funniest jokes he’s ever heard. He’s wholesome and pure, and he’s the best.

Just take a look at his yard!

The Grinch tests his Christmas theft out on Bricklebaum’s house, which results in its own charming chaos that the jolly character doesn’t even notice.

By the end of the film, The Grinch has stolen (and returned) all of Mr. Bricklebaum, and the rest of the Whoville’s gifts, food and decorations and is welcomed into the Lou Who family home for Christmas dinner, as the story goes.

Mr. Bricklebaum gazes at Grinch across the table and says “That’s my best friend.”

You can take a peek at Kenan giving a preview of his silly voice for the character in an interview below!

If Mr. Bricklebaum doesn’t get you into the holiday spirit, the music certainly will.

Music plays a big part in the film, beginning with Tyler The Creator’s take on “You’re a Mean one Mr. Grinch and “I Am the Grinch”. Early on in the film, The Grinch is chased by a growing group of carolers who brightly and crisply sing Pentatonix verison of ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’. It has a wonderful track of other Christmas songs we already know, sung by their original artists including ‘Run, Run Rudolph’, ‘Jingle Bells’, ‘My Favorite Things’ by The Supremes, ‘Zat You Santa Claus’, and more.

It includes a scene in which Nat King Cole’s ‘A Christmas Song’ softly begins playing, and brings you into a traditional Who Christmas celebration and by doing so, into the Christmas spirit.

Don’t fret, we also get to hear a joyous rendition of The Whos’ traditional heartwarming ‘Welcome Christmas’ carol in which they all hold hands and join around a momentous tree-the biggest they’ve ever had.
