‘Pokemon Go’ Teases Generation 4 & More Major Updates

It’s been a while since we’ve got a big Gen-drop for Pokemon Go. Considering how spaced out the Generation 3 reveals were – and the Alolan Form additions in May – , it’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 8 months since the last batch of Gen 3 Pokemon were released. In fact, there’s still several Pokemon in the Gen 3 roster that still have yet to be released. Though that’s not stopping Pokemon Go from kicking things up a notch with a reveal trailer for an entire new Generation of Pokemon.

Whereas past Pokemon Go updates have had future Generation Pokemon added in batches and then revealing a teaser trailer months later, this update seems to have been reversed. We got the above teaser for Gen 4 earlier this week, but dataminers didn’t discover all 107 Gen 4 Pokemon in the game data until today – after yesterday’s Android update. This throw all of our usual timeline prediction tools out the window and it looks like we could see new Pokemon start appearing as early as later today or even next week – after the close of the Psychic Event on the 14th. Though considering the success of the Gen 3 release schedule, we’ll most likely see these 107 Pokemon released in batches. The trailer seems to hint at the starters coming first, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they once again released some new Ghost Types in time for Halloween – especially since Gen 4 introduced the multiform Ghost-Type Rotom. Though new Pokemon aren’t the only changes coming to Pokemon Go.

Pokemon behavior and powers will soon get updates as well. This would mark the second update each has received – the first being the introduction of weather and the Gen 1 power balance that nerfed the likes of Lapras, etc respectively. Weather will no longer have as large of an effect on the types of Pokemon that will spawn, but Niantic is increasing the variability of Pokemon that spawn in parks and nature reserves. As for balancing the battle mechanics, CP values will be adjusted moving forward as well as Stamina and Defense values. The goal is to make it so that Defensive Pokemon aren’t just trying to run out the clock, but actually can outlast their competition.

Finally, we finally got an answer to the whole Meltan mystery that happened after last month’s Community Day. As many surmised, this is indeed the special never before seen Pokemon that was originally teased for Pokemon: Let’s Go. It appears Meltan will only appear once a Mystery box is open. The finer points are still being revealed, but it looks as though the item you’ll receive in Pokemon Go for pairing it with a Pokemon: Let’s Go will be this mystery box, which should then cause Meltan to spawn for you for a limited time. Again, there’s still more to be discovered, but at least we’re getting answers – and more interactions between Professor Oak and Willow.
