‘Venom’ Mid-Credits Scene Explained

Warning: the following article may contain spoilers for Venom.

Hours after Venom was screened on Thursday, the mid-credits scene of the film was leaked online.

Similarly to many movies these days, Venom’s post-credits scenes tease a possible sequal to the film. The sequel would take place in Sony’s Spider-Verse, which is a universe featuring Spider-Man characters such as Morbius the Living Vampire, Black Cat, Silver Sable and Kraven the Hunter.

The scene follows stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, who has returned to his job as investigative journalist following the film’s events. He heads to a prison after getting a request to do so. A serial killer promised to share details about murders he has committed.

A guard leads him down a hall and warns him that the mane he’s about to see is dangerous. They enter the cell to see Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady as he writes a greeting with his own blood. He dons a red wig and cracks a joke with Eddie about himself being a serial killer. he then tells Eddie that when he escapes, he wants to bring carnage with him.

Carnage, introduced in 1992, is similar to venom minus the morals. He most enjoys seeing others in pain, and producing it. He also is tough to kill. He heals impressively, and is of course, very popular.

In the 1990 Marvel Comics 1990 crossover event, “Maximum Carnage”, he was the focus, and it led to several successful video games. he’s been seen in a few animated specials, but has never made it to a live-action version.

While one of scene is simply an extended preview for the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the other actually does depict Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock expanding his world by meeting with someone who has the potential to change the momentum of his movies.

The Zombieland star had confirmed his role would be minor in this film, but but that it would allow him to return for the sequel.

Venom was received well on Thursday by fans, but not so much critics.

The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer and stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Woody Harrelson, Sope Aluko, Scott Deckert, Marcella Bragio, and Michelle Lee.
