Andrew Lincoln Could Be Returning to Direct an Episode of ‘The Walking Dead’

Despite Andrew Lincoln’s confirmed on-screen exit from AMC’s hit series The Walking Dead, it turns out; he might continue his involvement with the series behind-the-scenes.

Earlier this year, during San Diego Comic-Con, Lincoln addressed a packed Hall-H and broke his silence on his rumored departure. At that time, he said, “This will be my last season playing the part of Rick Grimes. I love this show. It means everything to me. I love the people who make this show. I’m particularly fond of the people who watch this show,” before suspiciously adding, “My relationship with Rick Grimes is far from over.”

The last part of his statement confused fans of the series. If Rick Grimes was walking away from the world of walkers, how could Lincoln’s relationship with the series and the character still be far from over? Entertainment Weekly reports that perhaps Lincoln was speaking about taking on an active role behind the scenes.

Lincoln told EW recently that he will be returning to Georgia and to set in the coming months. His goal would be to learn about directing with hopes of directing an episode himself. Lincoln told EW:

“I’m going back,” says Lincoln. “I’m going back to shadow a director, and my intention is to direct next year.”

The Walking Dead‘s ninth season hasn’t even started yet, and fans are already grappling with the loss of their leader, Rick Grimes. Now, at least, they can take some solace in knowing that Andrew Lincoln’s intentions are to return to The Walking Dead world, albeit in a different capacity.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC with all new episodes beginning Sunday, October 7th at 9 pm EST.
