For years horror fans have believed we would never see Robert Englund play the role that he made iconic ever again. However, The Goldbergs has taken what was one a dream to see Englund dawn Freddy Krueger’s makeup again and made that a reality for fans of the horror villain around the world. The Halloween episode of the hit sitcom focuses on the youngest Goldberg son and his fears after watching A Nightmare on Elem Street for the first time.
For every horror fan, this will be a relatable episode. Most of us remember the first time we saw A Nightmare on Elm Street. My favorite memory stems though from my first viewing with friends. A viewing that leads to a fear of the trash cans outside falling in the morning hours and a friend of mine screaming out, “He will get you two first,” before jumping in the middle of my other friend and me on an air mattress in my living room.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly last year, Englund insisted the following:
‘I’m too old to do another Freddy now,’ shares Englund, 70. ‘If I do a fight scene now it’s got to be real minimal because I can’t snap my head for eight different takes and different angles. My spine gets sore. I can still be mean and scary, but I’m mostly relegated now to sort of Van Helsing roles, old doctors and s—. So it’s fun that the last moment of me ever playing Freddy is a wink to the audience.’
This makes his appearance on The Goldbergs all the more charming. I feel that the sitcom centering around a family in the 80s will lend itself as one final wink to Englund’s Krueger as well as to his fans of the legendary horror villain. Leave it to Englund to make our dreams come true one last time. The teaser for the Halloween episode through The Golderbergs Instagram account has made the special appearance all the more exciting.
If the teaser is not enough of an incentive to watch the show, Englund’s photograph reminiscent of one with him and Heather Langenkamp on his Instagram certainly does the trick.
The Goldbergs episode Nightmare on Elk Avenue will air in October. Make sure, whatever you do, after watching the episode not to fall asleep.
