‘Child’s Play’ Reboot Begins Production with Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry and Gabriel Bateman to Star

It’s happening! Chucky, the demonized Good Guy doll is officially making his way back to the big screen in an all-new franchise reboot.

Jonathan Glickman, MGM’s President, Motion Picture Group and John Hegeman, President, Orion Pictures announced via a press release on Thursday that Aubrey Plaza (Legion, Parks and Recreation), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta, If Beale Street Could Talk), and Gabriel Bateman (Lights Out, American Gothic) have been cast in the film.

The Child’s Play remake will be a contemporary reimagining of the original franchise and will follow Karen (Plaza), a mother who gives her son Andy (Bateman) a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature. Production is already underway in Vancouver.

Filmmaker Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) is on board to direct with a script was written by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury). David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith will produce under their KatzSmith Productions banner.

Back in July, it was reported that the studio was fast-tracking the project, and now, that certainly seems to be the case.

The upcoming reboot from MGM and Orion Pictures will be a departure from the still-thriving Child’s Play franchise from Don Mancini, which first premiered in 1988. The original Child’s Play franchise currently consists of 7 feature films, each one evolving the characters more and more. The latest film in the franchise, Cult of Chucky clearly displays the continued evolvement and growth of Chucky creator Don Mancini (and the Chucky character). Mancini expertly combines horror with humor and beautifully poetic cinematography shots with old-school gore making this film an enjoyable ride for any fan of the franchise. There is also a television series based on the Chucky character in production from Mancini.
