‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Star Dave Bautista Still Really Wants a Drax Standalone Movie Even If He’s Not In It

While the future of the beloved Guardians of the Galaxy characters remains uncertain, film star Dave Bautista still feels it’s important that fans get the chance to experience his character’s past.

In early June, Bautista began advocating for a Drax the Destroyer standalone film. At the time, Jared Leto’s Joker solo film was just announced and Bautista seemed hopeful that the odds could be in his favor for a Drax film. In response to a fan calling the Joker film a “bad idea,” Bautista had tweeted, “on the bright side! Which I usually try to look at… if this can happen then the chances of me getting a Drax movie have got to be astronomically high! Like so high that I’m going to stop tweeting and sit by the phone and wait for @MarvelStudios to call! ….any second now!”

This all happened, of course, all the drama regarding Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. In late July, Gunn was abruptly fired from the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy as well as from having any involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after inappropriate tweets were uncovered. Since then, Bautista has been the most vocal of the cast speaking out in support of Gunn.

In fact, in a recent interview, Bautista said that his feelings on the issue are so strong that he’s not sure he would even want to work with Disney/Marvel in the future. He said“It’s a bitter-sweet conversation — um, no it’s a bitter-bitter conversation because I’m not really happy with what they’ve done with James Gunn. They’re putting the movie off. It’s on hold indefinitely. To be honest with you I don’t know if I want to work for Disney.”

Now, in a new interview, Bautista circled back to the possible Drax standalone film. The actor still feels it would be a beautiful and important story to tell, even if he wasn’t the one to star in the film. Bautista told MTV International:

[row]”I think it’s a beautiful story and I think it’s been lost and overlooked a little bit,” he said. “It’s a beautiful and heartbreaking emotional thing to know where that love for his family and that heartbreak over his family being lost and murdered, where it comes from I think.

I really pushed and fought for the Drax standalone film but I don’t think it’s ever going to happen. I really wish they would because I think there’s a story to be told there and I think the fans would really love to see that story, even if it’s not me portraying Drax, I just think it is an interesting story to tell.”[/row]
