It’s been quite some time since Netflix has released a look at the next generation of actors taking over the iconic Royals on the upcoming third season of The Crown, but now we’ve got our first look at Outlander’s Tobias Menzies as Prince Phillip. Taking over for Matt Smith, Menzies will step into the leading role alongside Broadchurch’s Olivia Colman who will be taking over as Queen Elizabeth II from Claire Foy. Check out the photo below!
So far Netflix has released sneak peeks at Colman as Queen Elizabeth, Helena Bohem Carter who will be taking over Vanessa Kirby’s Princess Margaret and The Exorcist’s Ben Daniels, who is stepping into Matthew Goode’s role as Lord Snowdon.
Season three of The Crown will cover the next decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s rule into the 1970’s, which finds her and Prince Philip in their fifties as their children begin growing up in the Royal limelight. Other casting announcements include Josh O’Connor (God’s Own Country) as Prince Charles and Allied’s Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother, replacing Victoria Hamilton.
It has always been Netflix’s plan to time jump on The Crown every couple of seasons, which they knew would require them to recast all of its main cast. While it’s a risky move for any series, fans seem to have been reacting very positively to the casting announcements. Season three The new actors will be playing these roles for seasons 3 & 4 before another time jump would take place should there be a season 5.
Menzies is best known for her role as Jack Randall/Frank Randall in STARZ’s Outlander. He also appeared in the first season of AMC’s latest drama The Terror and guest-starred throughout seasons 1-3 of Catastrophe.
While a release date for the new season hasn’t been announced yet, it is likely that it will drop on Netflix in the Winter of 2018.
