Mahershala Ali Stars in HBO’s First Trailer for ‘True Detective’ Season 3

On Sunday night, HBO surprised True Detective fans with the very first trailer for the long-awaited third season. The trailer dropped ahead of HBO’s Sharp Objects season finale.

The first trailer introduces viewers to Oscar winner Mahershala Ali as police detective Wayne Hayes, but there’s a twist. In this very first look at the upcoming season, we see Hayes at three different ages and apparently grappling with the after-effects of a case he can’t seem to forget.

Ali’s voiceover in the trailer provides haunting overtones as his character can be heard saying, “Before you ever knew me, I wasn’t scared much. That wasn’t a fearful man. Things I’ve seen, things I know, wouldn’t do anything but cause harm. My whole brain’s a bunch of missing pieces. My job, there’s no certainty. This peace is more haunting than anything. I want to know the whole story.”

In addition to Ali, season 3 of True Detective will star Stephen Dorff,  Ray Fisher, Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer, and Carmen Ejogo. Other cast members set for recurring roles include Deborah Ayorinde (Girls Trip), Michael Greyeyes (Fear the Walking Dead), Jon Tenney (The Closer) and Rhys Wakefield (The Purge).

Season one writer Nic Pizzolatto returns to pen the third season, with the exception of the fourth episode. The fourth episode was written collaboratively by both Pizzolatto and David Milch. Pizzolatto will also serve as showrunner, executive producer and he will be making his directorial debut during the upcoming season as he steps into the director’s chair along with Daniel Sakheim and Jeremy Saulnier who directed the first two episodes. Saulnier will also executive produce along with Scott Stephens, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Cary Fukunaga, Scott Stephens, Steve Golin, Bard Dorros and Richard Brown.

The official logline for the upcoming season says, “The third season of the show tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods. Mahershala Ali stars as Wayne Hayes, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. Carmen Ejogo and Stephen Dorff also star. Created by Nic Pizzolatto. Debuts January 2019.”

Season three of True Detective will premiere in January of 2019.
